CONHEÇA O ARTISTA

KNOW THE ARTIST

I am deeply inspired by the great classical artists of 19th-century Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, who captured the natural light present in everyday life. Quick brushstrokes were necessary to record a unique and fleeting visual moment, while the movement of the sun transformed the colors and shapes of the landscape from one minute to the next.

Impressionism emerged as a response to the artistic movement that preceded it (as, in a way, artistic movements tend to do) and became almost the opposite of what had been produced at the beginning of the 19th century: Realism. The artist’s experience and interpretation of the surrounding scene became priorities, leaving behind the meticulousness that many of us, as artists, have when striving to faithfully represent our subjects.

After five years working as an architect on the southern coast of Bahia and discovering, during this time, my principles as an artist, I feel the need to share my interpretation of what I experience in this place. The rustic character of the wood, which seems to defy the passage of time and become more beautiful with age; the natural light, which is the main attraction of any space; and the appreciation of local reality all make me want to show the world the beauty of this region.

As a great architect once explained to me:

“We’re not going to hide the shower drain in the bathroom floor. We’re not designing an apartment in the capital. The drain has a function in the house. Instead, let’s create the most beautiful one we can, something that speaks to this entire rustic beach house.”

Little by little, I became part of a very peculiar community. Each individual shares very similar aesthetic values, all of them paying homage to vernacular architecture, whether in a large-scale building or in the smallest improvised extension. However, the aesthetic reading of these environments can vary radically across different mediums, settings, media, and forms of visual communication.

Thus, this entire artistic journey was born from the need to make my community see my perspective and my personal experiences throughout these five years of living in the Bahian heat.
